Windows Server R2 Stuck at "Updating Your System” - GeeksforGeeks.
If you have direct internet without any proxy or WSUS servers, it is going to work without any issues most of the time. That is how it works on personal computers at home. But when there is a complicated setup in place with the different versions of servers, multiple Internet gateways, and proxy servers, then you will face random issues with Windows update. I thought that something was wrong with the Internet connectivity, but the Internet browsing worked fine on the same server.
After finding several solutions online, only one worked for me. By the way, it is a virtual machine running on Hyper-V.
The below steps are applicable for Windows and server Operating Systems also if you face similar issues. Let me add the solution first which worked for me after trying several steps. In my case, I disabled the Windows firewall for some other purpose earlier.
Visit the Services under server manager, make sure that the Windows firewall service is running. You should remove the proxy settings and provide direct internet to Windows servers to download Windows updates.
Cleaning up the folder may help to resume Windows updates successfully. Go to the Services and locate the Windows update service. Stop the service. Once the service stopped successfully, navigate to the following folder location and delete all content files and folders. This is the place where Windows OS downloads the updates.
After deleting the files, start the same Windows Update service you stopped initially. I tried steps 2 and 3 first, but it did not help in my case. My server never had a proxy server for Internet access. Skip to main content.

I have been breaking my head about this and I can't seem to find any article that solves my issue here. Although most of them almost look like the same problem, they all seem to be a bit diffrent from my issue. The updates are Identified, but the download progress never starts.
The traffic is arriving as it should and not blocked by any firewall. Although, in the traffic flow I can see where the problem is. The request is coming in from the client to wsus and wsus responds with a Precondition failed.
This is where I am stuck. Then I installed it on windows server r2. This worked immediately until yesterday, same issue I found out what the problem was, there is a Dynatrace agent installed on the machine which does application monitoring. Apparentely this was causing the problem. When I removed it, it was solved immediately. I am opening a call with their support team to get this sorted out, because I have no idea why this would impact the WSUS.
I had this issue on a few Win 10 and machines. Applying this patch manually resolved the issues. The machine hasn't got any internet so that seems to be a problem when using the Get-windowsupdatelog command :. The windows image I am using was already patched with the cumulative update so I can't install this package unfortunately. Yes, this is working as it should. Presumably, that is a different server name and IP address - making that particular wireshark capture irrelevant.
Edit: Is it also possible the client started to receive downloads from the old server and that is why BITS is unable to continue the download? I am sure that that is not the case. But isn't that normal? It can't just list the content like that. Yes, I think a is normal. If there was a problem there could be a message pointing in the direction of the issue. The log complains of BITS errors. The server may be misconfigured. Are there other clients on the same subnet as the client which is having problems? Are they having problems, too? Is there a firewall rule on the client which is not allowing the traffic from the server, or something else from the I am sure this is not a firewall issue. Otherwise, if some clients are updating, while the vast majority of clients are not, then I would look to network and firewall settings. There are a lot of subnets in that range but I only tested 3 or 4 subnets with 2 machines each. All domain joined clients can now download their updates again. Hi I am sure this is not a firewall issue. All clients have this same problem unfortunately. Thanks for the help already! All clients on How many subnets are in that massive range? But you're saying that a client on the same subnet as the server still cannot download updates?
What do you mean in every subnet? WSUS even responds to it, but the error " precondition failed" as seen in wireshark makes me think that the server is denying it because of a certain issue. But that cannot be a firewall rule, because the traffic is arriving. The only diffrence was the domain it is in. But I wouldn't know where to look for that. Go to a client and run a resultant set of policy rsop. The goal is to go through them and see which policy or policies is or are impacting WSUS settings.
Go through them until you eventually find which one s you need. I would like to think there are not many policies. And if there are, I would expect them to be named to describe their specific tasks. And since you know it is impacting all the computers you've looked at, I would look at policies which are applied broadly. It may prove to be easier to look at the group policy management console, but if you are not afforded that access, it may be beyond your reach - which is why I suggested looking at the client.
